Should I whiten my teeth?

Your smile is one of the first things a person will notice when you meet. If your teeth are stained, dull, or discolored, teeth whitening may be a great option for you. It is a simple, straightforward procedure and can take years off your appearance! Teeth bleaching is actually a misnomer, as there is absolutely no bleach in the products we use in our office. Would we really be a good Boulder dentist if we did?

Regardless of how well you care for your teeth, discoloration will occur over time. The main causes of stained teeth are genetics, certain antibiotics at a young age, tobacco, and certain foods, such as coffee and tea. Our teeth also darken over time as a part of the aging process. While preventing tooth discoloration is nearly impossible, our experienced team can help reverse the effects of discoloration by helping to create a whiter and brighter smile. We do not recommend abrasive whitening methods, such as charcoal toothpaste due to the damage that can be done if used improperly.

Whether it’s an in-office treatment or at-home treatment, the principles of teeth whitening are the same. A special whitening agent is applied to the teeth in order to remove stains and brighten your smile. As a dental office in Boulder, we know how important your smile is and will discuss your whitening needs and goals with you to determine which option is best for your mouth. We currently offer three different options for whiter teeth in our Boulder dental office: single-use boost, at-home trays, and in-office bleaching.

In-office teeth bleaching is the quickest and most effective method to a brighter, whiter smile. With the supervision of an experienced dental professional, a stronger bleaching solution can be used than with at-home kits. Optimal results are achieved much faster with the professional whitening treatment, and in many ways the results are much better given the nature of the bleaching agents that are used. On average, patients find they appear many years younger just by restoring the bright, white smile of their youth. We will clean your teeth, prepare them for the whitening procedure and apply an effective whitening gel to your teeth in successive 20-minute rounds. The whole process takes about an hour, start to finish. This is a great way to see big changes in your smile!

If a visit to our office for professional whitening isn’t an option for you, at-home treatment may provide the whitening you need. Many over-the-counter teeth whitening options exist, including whitening toothpastes, over-the-counter gels, rinses, strips, trays and more. OTC toothpastes and rinses work by removing surface stains using abrasive particles; however, too much abrasion over time can wear tooth structure away! The strips can be helpful to a certain extent, but they are one-size-fits-all and limited in their effectiveness since they are not prescription strength. Instead, we can fit you with custom-made whitening trays that will more accurately fit to your teeth for a more even, effective, and lasting whitening result. However, people with very gray teeth and teeth that are already very white often may not see drastic results with these products. Talk to Dr. Friedman about your options and your goals
